M’onmaは長年にわたり独自の制作を続けてきた作家です。自らを「端末」のようなものと捉え、外部から訪れ るものに手を委ね描きます。その制作プロセスは、シュルレアリスムのオートマティスムや霊媒的なドローイングとも接点を持ち、重層的で緻密な線の中から、道化師や霊的存在を思わせる像、文字とも記号ともつかない断片など、神秘性を帯びたイメージが現れます。
ニューヨークのCavin-Morris Galleryは、セルフトートやヴィジョナリー・アートをめぐる文脈のなかでM’onma の作品を継続的に紹介してきました。このたびETL-LABは、Cavin-Morris Galleryの協力を得て、これまでの仕事と歩みをまとめたM’onma初の作品集を刊行します。
国内を拠点に活動する作家でありながら、M’onmaの評価はニューヨークを中心に海外で先行してきました。 日本において、その作品世界をまとまった形で知る機会はこれまでありませんでした。本書では、1994年から 2025年にかけて制作された作品のうち26点を大判図版で収録し、日英併記のテキストを掲載しています。
付属する別紙には、M’onmaの若き日からの友人であり、同時代を生きた画家・原田章英氏によるテキスト、 M’onmaが日頃の制作に用いる色鉛筆で記した直筆サインとエディション番号、アトリエで撮影された写真プリントが含まれます。

M’onma has pursued a distinctive artistic practice for many years. He thinks of himself as a kind of “terminal,” allowing his hand to be guided by what comes to him from outside. His process has affinities with Surrealist automatism and mediumistic drawing. From dense layers of intricate linework emerge images imbued with mystery: figures suggestive of clowns and spiritual entities, and fragments that seem neither quite writing nor symbols.
Cavin-Morris Gallery in New York has long presented M’onma’s work in relation to self-taught and visionary art. With the cooperation of Cavin-Morris Gallery, ETL-LAB has now published M’onma’s first monograph, bringing together his work and tracing the course of his practice.
Although based in Japan, M’onma first gained recognition overseas, particularly in New York. His work has not previously been presented in depth in Japan. This volume presents 26 works made between 1994 and 2025 in large-format reproductions, accompanied by texts in both Japanese and English.
The accompanying insert includes a text by Akifusa Harada, a painter of M’onma’s generation and a friend since their youth; M’onma’s signature and edition number, written with the colored pencils he regularly uses in his work; and a photographic print made from an image taken in the artist’s studio.
